A flexible strong spine is a major part of Joseph Pilates Exercise method.  To help his clients maintain and achieve his vision of a supple controlled spine he invented a group of barrels designed to support, stretch and facilitate spinal movement. For those clients not suited to spinal work on the largest barrel apparatus, Joe designed the floor barrels.  Joe built 3 configurations of floor barrels to accommodate the varying bodies and skill levels of his clients: the full barrel, the half barrel, and the spine corrector.  We have re-built all three styles and sizes in composite hardwoods and alloys for strength and durability for your studio and clients.

The spine corrector first showed up in Mr. Pilates Studio in 1945, and is infamous in his studio for its use as an ending for men doing a full advanced reformer, to relax and open the spine after a vigorous work out.  It is a vital tool to help clients learn to control the strength of their spines, and balance it with flexibility.

The full and half floor barrels are designed to cover the various sizes of clients.  Their arch is in direct ratio to the ladder barrel and provides a way for the instructor to safely support a client’s spine during exercises and as an aid for opening stiff spines.  They were designed primarily as an aid to flexibility.
